MICHALIS TAVERN

WELCOME!

The Venetian harbor of our city was constructed between 1320 and 1356 by the Venetians. At that time, it served as the main commercial hub and a strategic point for controlling the sea against piracy. The surrounding buildings still reflect this rich history, showcasing a unique blend of Venetian and Ottoman architecture. They were originally used as warehouses, offices, ticket booths, carpentry workshops, blacksmith shops, and more.

The building that now hosts us was constructed between 1890 and 1895, during the Ottoman period. It was built on the foundations of the old Venetian wall, which is still visible just above the current structure.

Until the 1970s, the space functioned as a cooperage — a workshop where barrels for wine storage were made, as seen in old photographs. Later, it was transformed into a tavern, operating under various names such as “Varelas” and “Anemos.”

Since 2004, this space has been in the hands of our family and now operates as a family-run business named “MICHALIS.” In our warm and welcoming environment, you can enjoy high-quality food while taking in the breathtaking view of the Venetian harbor — a place that still carries the aromas and memories of the past, offering visitors a nostalgic journey between East and West.

Our Story

Taverna Michalis is located in the heart of the old Venetian harbor of Chania, in a building dating back to 1890–1895. It was originally used as a cooperage for wine storage and was later transformed into a tavern under various names. Since 2004, our family has preserved the tradition, offering authentic Cretan hospitality and flavors that blend the past with the present.

Our Menu

At Taverna Michalis, food is more than just a daily routine. It is an expression of hospitality, memory, and culinary tradition passed down through generations. From traditional Cretan and Greek dishes such as moussaka and saganaki to fresh seafood and vegetarian options, our menu satisfies every taste. Don’t miss our homemade desserts!

Our Location

Taverna Michalis is located in one of the most picturesque and historic parts of Chania, the Venetian Harbor. A place that is not just a city landmark but a living narrator of its history, from the Venetian era to today.
As you stroll along the harbor, you’ll encounter the beauty of Venetian architecture, the imposing lighthouse, the boats gently swaying on the water, and the alleys of the Old Town unfolding like a canvas full of colors, aromas, and sounds.
Right there by the water, among stone buildings steeped in centuries of history, is our tavern—a meeting point of old and new, of Eastern mystique and Western elegance.
Whether you visit us at noon, with the sun lighting up the sea, or in the evening, when the harbor lights reflect on the calm waters and the atmosphere takes on a romantic, almost cinematic feel, one thing is certain: your experience will be more than just a meal, it will be a journey through time and the history of the city. A setting where we build flavors, hospitality, and authenticity every day.
